There are many document types which are not worth typing over and over again. Official notices, letters, complaints and other documents have a standard layout and they usually contain the same expressions, like "Dear sir or madam" or "Best regards." The great thing about software is that when a pattern emerges, it can be automated, one way or another. Edi offers the same environment and options as other advanced text editors. In addition, it enables you to create and use templates for official documents. You may create and edit your own fields, after which you just need to fill in the blanks. You will not have to concern yourself about the layout of your text, because the software will arrange it automatically, without hindering your work.

The setup file is roughly 19 Mb large. This means that you can download the software in less than a minute with any type of Internet connection. The installation process is also fast and it does not involve advanced configurations. Edi works on Windows XP (SP3), Vista and Windows 7 and it requires .NET Framework 4.0 and MS SQL server CE 4. If one or both of these components are missing, the setup wizard will install them automatically.

At a first glance over the user interface, you will notice that Edi is similar to other text editors, like MS Word. It features the same options for changing the font settings, adding bookmarks, hyperlinks, tables, adjusting the layout and more. They are also organized the same way, under different tabs. You will be mostly interested in the Variables tab, where you will find different options for inserting variables and editing their values.

When adding a variable, you will have to name it and specify its type, on a separate window. The variable's type can be text, a date, time or a number. You can also type a description or insert a value on the same window. The variables will appear in the editing area as code and if you insert more than one, you can edit their values on the same window, after clicking the Values button. Depending on what variables you insert, you will find different options on this window. You may need to type plain text, select a date, use a counter to specify an hour or a calculator to insert a number.

Once you are done editing the values, they will replace the variable codes automatically. Templates can be saved, so you can use them again at a later date. It is also possible to download new templates from the Internet. Additionally, you will be glad to know that Edi can save your documents in various formats, including .doc, .docx, .html, .rtf, .epub and others.

Pros

Edi provides most features which are included in other advanced text editors. In addition, it lets you create and edit templates that will spare you from typing the same documents all over again. These templates will also help you with the layout of your documents.

Cons

The software does not include a word counter. Edi's unique capabilities allow you to create and modify the same type of documents, without affecting their layout in any way. It lets you create templates in a flexible and comfortable manner.
